Lagori.

A furniture design done as part of a competition by IDHA Labs called ‘Kaarigari’. A challenge for Architects and designers to design a contemporary Indian furniture element that is unique and inspired by any traditional craft practice(s). As a team of two, my teammate Nivedhitha Sekar and I designed The Lagori Console to shed light to the craft of marble carving. The form highlights one of the most ancient games not known to the world; Lagori (Seven Stones). With its distinctive massing and sculptural play on materiality, the ‘Lagori Console’ is an approachable iteration of modern organic design.

The console table, often overlooked, is a versatile furniture piece that seamlessly integrates into any space or becomes a standout feature. It serves as an anchor behind a sofa, adds flair to narrow halls, or makes a welcoming statement for guests. The ‘Lagori Console’ infuses modern design with Indian heritage, showcasing the ancient game of Lagori. With distinctive massing and sculptural materiality, it embodies modern organic design, representing elements of the Lagori game. Crafted from Makrana marble, renowned for its quality and whiteness, the console features hand-carved details reminiscent of a sculpture. The addition of a curved resin leg creates a floating effect, while reintroducing Marble carving from Rajasthan to architectural furniture design.
