The Beanery.

This architectural renovation project reimagines a functionally declining building in a prime location in Manipal as a student café designed for both study and social engagement. Comfort and adaptability form the core of the design, with robust materials and easily movable elements allowing the space to withstand heavy daily use while transitioning seamlessly between functions. During the day, the café operates as a calm environment for focused work and study, and by night it transforms into a lively venue for events such as open mic sessions and book readings. Reflecting the rhythm of Manipal itself, the building supports a fluid shift between quiet concentration and collective entertainment.

Process.

The project involved a thorough site analysis and engagement with the local crowd to understand their needs. Situated within the Medical College campus of Manipal, the target users were primarily students. After extensive research, I proposed to transform the space into a student café. The initial phase focused on developing a compelling design concept and optimizing the building's layout for seamless transition from day to night. Drawing inspiration from popular after school hangout spots like milkshake parlours, the design incorporated vibrant colours and engaging posters to appeal to Manipal's youthful demographic.
